Apollo App Icon

App icon for the award-winning Reddit app on iOS

Apollo is built by a former Apple employee with feedback from thousands of Redditors to sculpt the best client possible. It features a beautiful, native iOS design, smooth, customizable gestures, fast loading pages, a supercharged Media Viewer experience, a powerful, full Markdown editor, a Jump Bar for lightning-fast navigation, and so much more.

Christian Selig,

Apollo's developer, Christian, was notified by Reddit that the current icon was too similar to Reddit's Snoo. So the community started to submit app icon design concepts for Apollo. As someone who uses Apollo almost everyday, I wanted to make something too.

I wanted to design something that still keep key elements in the original app icon of Apollo to keep it recognizable, since the icon has been long adopted by the fanbase during its beta testing phase.

  • White robot

  • Two red eyes

  • Antenna

  • Blue/violet gradient background

The inspiration for the icon concept also came from the macOS icons design language, where it's not entirely flat but with a hint of depth.

The inspiration for the icon

It remained a concept until less than a year later, when Christian contacted me because he was interested in making my concept available as an icon option. Though some elements had to be tweaked to ensure that the design doesn't violate Reddit's guidelines.

Some variations of the eyes shape and antenna were considered

The icon was eventually rolled out to users as a custom icon in May 2019.
